Toyota RAV4 is a front- or four-wheel drive five-door SUV of a compact category that “flaunts” a brutal design, progressive “stuffing” and good “driving” potential ... Its main target audience is city dwellers who prefer an active lifestyle, practice outings and love travels…

The fifth generation crossover made its official debut at the end of March 2018 (at the International Auto Show in New York), and compared to its predecessor, it was not only completely updated in technical terms, but also experienced dramatic changes in its image.

After the "change of generations" the car became much more courageous externally and internally, "moved" but a completely new platform, "armed" with new power plants and received an extended security complex.

A quick glance is enough to understand - in the appearance of the "fifth" Toyota RAV4, the bet is made on brutality. And I must say, the SUV looks attractive, harsh and balanced, and in its outlines there is an "off-road spirit" (which is facilitated by the "armor" made of unpainted plastic around the body perimeter).

Aggressive expression "face" with a predatory look of lighting technology, a wide "hexagon" of the radiator grille and a monumental bumper, a solid silhouette with angular wheel arches, sculptural "splashes" on the sidewalls and a "floating" roof, frying stern with graceful lanterns and a sculptural bumper, from under which two "trunks" of the exhaust system look out - the designers of "Toyota" clearly did their best.

With its outer dimensions, the Toyota RAV4 of the fifth incarnation corresponds to the concepts of a compact class: it stretches 4600 mm in length, reaches 1855 mm in width, and is 1685-1690 mm in height. The gap between the pairs of wheels of the front and rear axles at the five-door fits into 2690 mm, and its ground clearance is 195 mm.

Interior

The interior of the 2019 Toyota RAV4 model year is designed to match the exterior - there is a bit of brutality here, and smooth surfaces and lines predominate, as if outlined along the ruler.

Directly in front of the driver are a "plump" multi-steering wheel with a three-spoke rim and a "smart" instrument cluster with dial gauges and a large display in the middle, which displays a speedometer.
The dominant place in the crossover's cabin is reserved for the protruding display (7 or 8 inches) of the Enture 3.0 media system, under which the stylish “microclimate” unit and the activation keys for secondary functions are ergonomically concentrated.

Inside, the fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 is promised sufficient space for passengers in both rows of seats. The front seats are based on relief-profiled seats with pronounced sidewalls, optimal padding density and a large number of adjustments. In the back there is a comfortable sofa that can accommodate three adult passengers.

The crossover has no problems with practicality - it has a luggage compartment of the correct shape, the volume of which, with a five-seat layout, has 580 liters. The second row of seats folds down in a 60:40 ratio to create a level floor, increasing the load compartment capacity to 1,690 liters.

In a niche under the raised floor near the five-door there is a stowaway and a minimum set of tools.

Specifications

In the Russian market, the "fifth" Toyota RAV4 is offered with two gasoline four-cylinder "aspirated" engines of the Dynamic Force family, capable of operating in the Atkinson cycle at low loads, which are equipped with combined fuel injection, phase shifters on both camshafts and a 16-valve DOHC timing belt with a chain drive:

  • basic versions relies on a 2.0-liter unit, producing 149 horsepower at 6600 rpm and 206 Nm of torque at 4400-4900 rpm;
  • more powerful versions are equipped with a 2.5-liter engine generating 199 hp. at 6600 rpm and 243 Nm of peak thrust at 4000-5000 rpm.

The "junior" engine by default mates with a 6-speed "mechanics" and front-wheel drive transmission, but for an additional charge it can be equipped with a Direct Shift-CVT variator with a starting gear and an all-wheel drive system with a multi-plate clutch, which transfers up to 50% of the thrust to the rear wheels if necessary , and the "senior" works together exclusively with the 8-band hydromechanical "automatic" and all-wheel drive.

At the same time, the "top" options are able to boast of an advanced Dynamic Torque Vectoring system installed with both motors: it implies the presence of individual couplings on the rear wheels (as a result of which thrust vector control is organized) and cam couplings on both ends of the propeller shaft, which disconnect it when driving on highway.

Speed, dynamics and consumption

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 8.5-11 seconds for the crossover, and its maximum speed is 190-200 km / h. In the combined cycle, for every "hundred" of the run, the five-door on average "drinks" from 6.5 to 7.3 liters of fuel, depending on the modification.

Design features

Toyota RAV4 of the fifth generation is based on the universal "bogie" TNGA K with a load-bearing body structure, in which high-strength grades of steel are abundantly used.

On both axles of the crossover, independent suspensions with transverse stabilizers, steel springs and hydraulic shock absorbers are installed: in the front - of the McPherson type, in the rear - a multi-link layout.

"Japanese" is equipped with a rack and pinion steering and an active electric amplifier. Disc brakes (ventilated at the front) are used on each of the four wheels of the five-door, supplemented by a large number of electronic assistants.
